Nyssa enters the world

Well our children certainly know how to get our attention, Eden was a LONG drawn out labour, but our latest family member decided to pop out a little quicker than anticipated.

At about 8.30 last night we set off for the hospital, as contractions were getting stronger and more regular, but still about 5 minutes apart. Hopping in the car, with a quick contraction stop on Darby Street, (One of Newcastle's finest dining and coffee scenes), another by the side of the road by the Newcastle Showground, (no we weren't sightseeing!), and then our penultimate stop at the intersection of Griffith and Turton Roads, right by the Energy Australia Football Stadium, (I swear we weren't sightseeing!), by this stage, Robyn's waters had broken and she refused to get back into the car, (maybe she thought we were going to do some more sightseeing?), and she none too calmly told me that the baby was coming.

Anyway, I called 000, (the Aussie equivalent to 911) and had some dot point delivery reminders presented to me by the paramedic operator while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. (Before I could do anything, I had to get Robyn to take her jeans off first, and get her into the back of theStation wagon!) By this stage Nyssa's head was just visible and we needed to keep the baby's progress under control, lots of breathing control by Robyn and pressure from Tracey and Robyn.

What a scene! Tracey and Mike, assisting Robyn on all fours, with a paramedic rescue truck, an ambulance and five paramedics in attendance at a busy Newcastle intersection.After a brief discussion it was decided to get Robyn onto a stretcher and into the ambulance to either deliver on the way to hospital, or get her there just in time.

A short ambulance ride to the hospital lights and sirens of course, wheeled into emergency, a nervous doctor in Emergency @ the John Hunter Hospital (his first delivery), a midwife and about five nurses checking out the doctor's form. Robyn didn't mess about, soon after a contraction without too much of a push, (but lots of pain), welcome to the world,

"Congratulations, Its a Girl!"

2101 hrs on the 17th of May, 2005 EST.

After a few minutes, Robyn was wheeled up to the delivery suite, (next to the birth centre, where she intended to have the baby), we caught up with Tracey, who'd driven to the Hospital without her licence, (she got it in the mail today!)on the "wrong" side of the road, in a heavy downpour; Dad cut the cord, Dad went out into the corridor and almost passed out, (I think at this stage I got more attention than Robyn!), Nyssa had a feed, was weighed at 8lb4oz (3.745kg), had another feed, Robyn got checked over and had a shower, then Mum and Bub moved down to the ward K1. Mike and Tracey got home at 0030 hrs.
